Therapeutic Listening

Enhancing Brain-Body Connection Through Sound

At Hummingbird Pediatric Therapies, we offer Therapeutic Listening®, a powerful sound-based intervention designed to support children with sensory processing, emotional regulation, coordination, and attention challenges. Through carefully designed music and expert guidance, this approach helps strengthen the neurological pathways that support daily functioning and development.

Whether your child struggles with focus, self-regulation, communication, or movement, Therapeutic Listening may be an effective part of their individualized care plan.

What Is Therapeutic Listening?

Therapeutic Listening is a customized auditory therapy that uses specially filtered music to activate and organize multiple parts of the brain simultaneously. Children wear headphones to listen to specific music tracks that help improve how the brain processes sound and movement.

The music is professionally engineered with subtle frequency shifts and modulations to stimulate the nervous system. This type of stimulation promotes better sensory integration, improved posture and balance, and increased attention and regulation.

Therapeutic Listening is always administered by trained occupational therapists as part of a comprehensive, sensory-integrative therapy program.

What Does a Therapy Session Look Like?

Therapeutic Listening may be incorporated as part of a child’s occupational therapy session or can be integrated into a home program under the supervision of a trained therapist.

During a session:

  • Your child wears headphones to listen to specially selected music for 15–30 minutes
  • Sessions may include play-based movement, balance, or fine motor activities to enhance the effects of the music
  • Music tracks are chosen based on your child’s progress, behavior, and therapeutic goals

Therapeutic Listening sessions are active and engaging, supporting the child’s body and brain as they work together in rhythm.

Why Families Choose Therapeutic Listening

Families often choose Therapeutic Listening because it is a non-invasive, calming, and effective intervention that supports multiple areas of a child’s development. It can:

  • Improve focus and sustained attention
  • Support better emotional and behavioral regulation
  • Enhance balance, posture, and coordination
  • Reduce sensory seeking or sensitivity
  • Increase communication, language development, and social participation

For many children, this program becomes a meaningful part of their sensory diet—helping them feel more grounded and ready to engage with their environment.
