Understanding Fluency in Children:

Stuttering & Cluttering

At Hummingbird Pediatric Therapies, we know that every child’s speech journey is unique. If your child struggles with stuttering or cluttering, you might be wondering how to help. Our goal is to provide children with the tools they need to speak more smoothly and confidently while supporting families every step of the way.

What is Fluency?

Fluency refers to the flow of speech—how smoothly words come out when we talk. When a child has a fluency disorder, they may experience interruptions in their speech, like pauses, repetitions, or irregular speech patterns. The two most common fluency disorders are:

\

Stuttering

A child may get “stuck” on certain sounds or words, repeat parts of words (e.g., “I-I-I want a snack”), or pause before speaking (e.g., “____ I want a snack”). Some children show physical signs of effort when speaking, like blinking or tensing their face.
\

Cluttering

A child may speak too quickly, blend words together, or leave out syllables, making it hard to understand them. Unlike stuttering, children who clutter are often unaware of their fast, jumbled speech.

How Do I Know If My Child Would Benefit from Therapy to improve their Fluency?

Fluency disorders look different in every child, but here are some common signs parents might notice at home:

  • Frequently repeating sounds, parts of words, or whole words
  • Pausing awkwardly or appearing “stuck” before speaking
  • Speaking too fast or in a jumbled way that’s hard to understand
  • Showing facial tension, blinking, lip pursing, or hand flailing while talking
  • Avoiding speaking situations due to frustration or embarrassment

If your child shows those physical signs, it is most likely they are aware of their stuttering, are experiencing negative emotions and are specifically trying to avoid stuttering.  It’s normal for young children (ages 3-5) to go through a phase of stuttering as their language develops. However, if stuttering persists or does not improve, it’s important to seek help.

    The Fluency Evaluation Process

If you’re concerned about your child’s speech, we recommend seeking out a speech evaluation. Our assessment process is designed to be comfortable and engaging for children. It may include:

    • Speech Samples – Our therapists will observe your child’s speech in different settings, for example talking with a family member, looking at pictures, or while playing to analyze fluency patterns.
    • Standardized Testing – For older children, we may use the Stuttering Severity Instrument (SSI) to measure stuttering severity.
    • Observing Emotional Responses – We also consider how stuttering impacts your child emotionally and socially.

At Hummingbird Pediatric Therapies, we take the child’s lead and do our best to make sure they are comfortable throughout the process.

How we help work through fluency challenges

Every child is different, so we tailor therapy to their unique needs. For younger children who are less aware of their stutter, we might take an indirect approach by modeling slow, controlled speech in fun, interactive ways during sessions without directly telling the child to use fluency shaping or modification strategies.

If the child is more aware of their stutter and showing physical concomitants, we may take more of a cognitive behavioral approach, where we address the feelings and emotions surrounding stuttering.  No matter the age, we always involve parents on the process and make sure they are aware of the best ways to support their child at home.

      Helping Your Child at Home

Parents play a huge role in supporting their child’s fluency. Here are some things you can do at home:

      • Model slow, relaxed speech when talking with your child.
      • Pause and give them time to respond—don’t rush to finish their sentences or jump in to complete their thoughts.
      • Encourage turn-taking in conversations so they don’t feel pressured.
      • Create a low-stress speaking environment where they feel comfortable.

Praise their effort in communication, not just how fluently they speak.
