Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I trust Hummingbird Pediatric Therapies to provide my child's care?
For over 30 years, Christina and her team have been empowering children and have earned and held the trust of their families. If you have time, you may find our google reviews helpful. We are fortunate that families are willing to share their Hummingbird experience with each of you.
We work hard to gain our families trust and so we are proud of them. We are known to look beyond our area of specialty and are fortunate to be a part of a team of dedicated pediatric therapists who have built a reputation on partnering with families in order to help your children be the best person they can be! We tailor our treatment approach to each individual child whether that be private or group sessions. We are with you every step of the way by attending IEP meetings with you, recommending outside enrichment activities and ensuring effective communication with your pediatrician or referring physician as well as all other members of your child’s developmental team.
Would my child benefit from services at Hummingbird Pediatric Therapies?
If your child has a delay in speech, communication/language, feeding, developmental, fine motor, gross motor, sensory or social emotional, then we can help them. It is never too late to get help for your child, however research has shown that the earlier we intervene, the better progress our kids make.
We also have our Children’s Academy which is therapist-led, small group, enrichment program for kids ages 2-6 at our locations in Westmont, Woodridge and Elmhurst.
If you aren’t sure if your child might need therapy, you can try our online developmental screener for ages 1-6 years old. Or call any of our clinics to talk to our intake team and share your concerns. They will help guide you through the process and can even connect you to a therapist directly if needed.
How do we get started?
Feel free to contact us via our contact form or call Hummingbird directly at 331-209-0047 for Elmhurst, 630-560-0136 for Westmont or 630-442-7662 for Woodridge. We will begin with a phone consult so we can learn more about your child and your concerns, and then schedule an evaluation for you to meet with a therapist.
Will you share your findings/test results/recommendations with my Pediatrician?
We are happy to collaborate with your child’s doctor and extended care team. Once you sign a release of information and add members of your child’s team, we will forward all reports and notes.
Do you consult with any other professionals?
It takes a village! We realize that there are many others involved in the your child’s care. Some of these professionals may include various pediatric specialists such as ENT, gastro-intestinal physicians, tutors, teachers, school-based therapists and even other outside private therapists. We will contact/share any information that you ask us to, as long as you add them onto the release of information form.
Does insurance cover therapy?
Is there a waiting list?
Our mission is to help every child that comes to us and to never have to wait! We feel that if you have concerns about your child’s development, why wait to get started? If we can not get you in for an evaluation within a reasonable time that you are comfortable with, we can refer you to another clinic.
How long will my child be in therapy?
This is the million-dollar question. Every child is so unique that it is impossible to predict how long they will need to be seen. We can tell you though, that one of THE top indicators of success is intensity and consistency.
Our mission is to get your child the help he or she needs and get them onto the developmental curve so that typically occurring developmental growth can occur. Based on a number of factors such as type of delay and how stimulable he or she is at the time of evaluation and during the first few weeks of therapy, we may be able to give you a better idea at that point.
What can I do to make sure my child gets the most out of his/her sessions?
Consistency. Consistency. Consistency. 🙂 One of the most important things you can do for your child is to make sure your child consistently attends their sessions. We realize that your main job is to be your child’s parent. This is why we also focus on teaching you some of our techniques and strategies so that you begin to feel more at ease carrying through our recommendations during everyday living activities so that you can incorporate these techniques into spontaneous situations. Your child will make faster progress by doing this versus sitting down with him and doing “therapy” at a table. We see faster carry-over of learned skills this way.
How much therapy do you recommend and how long are the sessions?
Depending on the type of therapy and number of goals set forth for your child, our sessions are typically 30-60 minutes long each. We see children anywhere from 1-4 sessions week. It just depends on the nature of your child’s needs.
