Adult Counseling

Individual Counseling for Adults at Hummingbird Pediatric Therapies

Caring for a child is meaningful, rewarding, and sometimes overwhelming. At Hummingbird, we believe that supporting the whole family includes supporting the people who care for the child.

Hummingbird offers individual counseling for caregivers of children currently receiving services at Hummingbird. This specialized service provides a dedicated space for caregivers to focus entirely on their own mental and emotional well-being, with absolutely no expectation that therapy sessions must center around parenting or your child’s therapy.

What can I expect from Adult Counseling at Hummingbird?

Whether you are navigating anxiety, depression, grief, stress, life transitions, relationship challenges, burnout, or simply feeling like you need a reliable safety net, you do not have to wait until things feel unmanageable to seek help.

Individual counseling is a place to talk through what is weighing on you, understand patterns that may be contributing to stress, and work with your counselor toward changes that feel realistic for your life.

\

Who provides these sessions?

Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors and Licensed Clinical Social Workers will work collaboratively with you to identify what you would like to address and what you hope to get from counseling

When and where do sessions occur?

These weekly, 1-hour sessions are offered virtually via telehealth or in person at our Elmhurst, Lisle, Westmont, and Woodridge locations

Our goal is to give caregivers an opportunity to focus on themselves, not just their role as a parent or caregiver. Your concerns, experiences, goals, and needs are the focus of your sessions.

A Collaborative Approach

Your counseling experience should be shaped around you. From the first appointment, you and your therapist will work together to identify what you would like to address and what you hope to get from counseling. Our therapists take your strengths, experiences, and perspective into account when developing goals for therapy. The issues you address and goals you set are discussed collaboratively with your counselor and may change as your needs change.

Our therapists use relational and evidence-based approaches tailored to each individual. Depending on your needs and goals, counseling may incorporate approaches and techniques drawn from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based strategies, trauma-informed care, and other therapeutic methods.

Sessions are provided by licensed clinical social workers and counselors who understand that every person comes to therapy with different experiences, challenges, and goals.

Your Well-Being Matters, Too

When you spend much of your time caring for someone else, it can be easy to put your own needs at the bottom of the list. Counseling gives you time that is specifically yours to talk openly, work through difficult experiences, and take care of your own mental health.

Ultimately, when caregivers have the opportunity to care for their own mental health, they are much better equipped to remain present, connected, and supported in their relationships with their children, proving that your well-being matters, too.

Get Started

You don’t have to have everything figured out before starting therapy. You just have to be willing to start the conversation!
