Augmentative and Alternative Communication

Empowering Communication for Children Through use of AAC

At Hummingbird Pediatric Therapies, we believe every child deserves a voice. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is a powerful tool that supports individuals with communication challenges by providing alternative methods to express themselves effectively. Whether through gestures, symbols, or speech-generating devices, AAC empowers children to connect with the world around them.

The Benefits of AAC

\

Provides an alternative communication method

\

Encourages language development through visual supports

\

Expands communication opportunities across different settings, environments, and partners

\

Helps children express requests, thoughts (and protests), and emotions effectively

Understanding AAC

AAC encompasses a range of tools that enhance or replace spoken communication. These systems help children communicate more effectively across different environments and with various communication partners.

Types of AAC

  • No-Tech AAC: Gestures, facial expressions, sign language
  • Low-Tech AAC: Picture/Core boards, written words, communication books
  • Mid-Tech AAC: Switch-based communication tools
  • High-Tech AAC: Speech-generating devices (SGDs) equipped with advanced software

Selecting the Right AAC System

Our experienced speech-language pathologists (SLPs) specialize in helping families find the most effective AAC system for their child. Through AAC evaluations and device trials, we assess multiple high-tech AAC options to determine the best fit based on individual needs. Feature matching ensures that the selected software aligns with the child’s communication skills and goals.

Popular AAC software we work with includes:

  • Grid
  • Touch Chat
  • TD Snap
  • TD Motor Plan
  • LAMP
  • Proloquo2Go

How to Embrace AAC

Learning to use AAC is a journey that requires patience, practice, and consistent modeling. Think of learning a new AAC, just as if you were learning a new language. The more you practice and incorporate AAC use into every day activities, the faster your child will adopt it.  We encourage families to:

  • Model communication using the AAC device: Just like learning a new language, consistent exposure and practice help children become proficient AAC users. Adults and siblings can all use it too!
  • Keep the device accessible: Encourage use in different settings by bringing the device along during activities. If it is nearby, it is easier to incorporate!
  • Ensure regular charging: A fully charged device ensures uninterrupted communication.

Frequently Asked Questions About AAC

Will AAC hinder my child's speech development?
No! Research shows that having access to a robust communication system like an AAC device supports language development and can even enhance verbal communication skills. AAC helps children learn language and boosts language skills.
Does my child need specific skills before using AAC?

No! There are no prerequisites— any child is a candidate for an AAC device.  The earlier a child starts using an AAC device, the better.  Introduction of an AAC device is beneficial for all children. The AAC evaluation is a useful tool to help find the most appriopriate AAC for your child at a particular point in time.

Should we start with only a few icons on the device?

No! A robust vocabulary from the beginning allows children to explore and expand their communication abilities, as well as to get comfortable and familiar with their options. It is important to not limit what a child is able to communicate.

How long does it take to learn AAC?

Every child is unique. Regular modeling and practice encourage faster adaptation.  We recommend parents modeling by even selecting an icon to show the child when they need help finding the icon they are looking for.

Is AAC only for nonverbal children?

No! There are many situations when an AAC device would be beneficial. It can be used for children that are not speaking, or for those that have difficulty communicating in certain situations or environments.  AAC benefits children with a range of speech and language challenges, including  speech sound disorders, childhood apraxia of speech, phonological disorders, speech intelligibility issues, and children who are non-speaking. Our thorough AAC evaluation process will help determine the right AAC option that is most appropriate for your child.

How much do AAC devices cost?

Costs vary. Many devices are covered by insurance, while others can be purchased independently or by downloading an app to your own iPad. After an AAC Evaluation, our SLPs guide families through the process to find the best funding options.

Should my child bring their AAC to other therapy sessions like OT or PT?

Your child should absolutely bring their AAC to all of their therapy sessions! Our pediatric PTs, OTs and Counselors are all trained on incorporating AACs naturally into therapy sessions.
